Bernard Friedland, Distinguished Professor, recognized by the ASME Rufus Oldenburger Medal and a fellow of IEEE and ASME, has contributed greatly to the avionics field and to modern control theory. His NSF- funded research entailed modeling of dynamic friction, and friction compensation. His seminal work on the “bristle model” for dynamic friction is widely cited. He also led an NSF-funded project in the use of modern control techniques in the heat treatment of silicon wafers. He is the author of two noted textbooks in modern control theory and linear circuits. and the co-author of textbooks on linear systems.
