Students Demonstrate Autonomous Car Performing Navigation Tasks

NJIT Highlander Autonomous Car Team was selected in the second round of DARPA Urban Challenge in which there were 56 teams/universities in the nation participating for the competition. NJIT Highlander Team was selected as one of the only 10 teams/universities nationwide for a Discovery Channel TV feature. Discovery Channel is preparing a series of TV shows focused on autonomous vehicles and technology advancements in which the NJIT team will be featured. The show will be telecasted worldwide sometime in February 2008.

Though the NJIT Highlander Autonomous Car had an unfortunate failure of a hardware chip in the controller section during the DARPA site visit, the car is now running performing navigation tasks. Though it is too late for the team, students are very excited about their accomplishements. This competition and project has provided our students a unique experience of real world engineering system development and integration, teamwork, project management, technology innovation, and business planning.
